Benefits of Earthing: By Dr. MercolaDr. Stephen Sinatra is a prominent cardiologist and an innovative pioneer. He promotes a number of natural strategies as "add-ons" to the field of cardiology, such as grounding or earthing, which is the topic of this interview.
What Is Earthing?
Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever?)
The terms "earthing" and "grounding" are interchangeable. It is simply the act of placing your bare feet on the earth, or walking barefoot. When you do, free electrons are transferred from the earth into your body, and this grounding effect is one of the most potent antioxidants we know of.
Unfortunately, few people ever walk barefoot anymore to experience it.
Hopefully, as more and more people become aware of the importance of being grounded, this will change, or at the very least spawn a much needed change in the way most footwear is made. Synthetic rubber soles disconnect you from the earth. Leather soles do not. So you can still find shoes that allow you to remain grounded without going barefoot.
Grounding has numerous benefits, aside from creating a general feeling of well-being. For example, walking barefoot can help ameliorate the constant assault of electromagnetic fields and other types of radiation from cell phones, computers and Wi-Fi.
By getting outside, barefoot, touching the earth, and allowing the excess charge in your body to discharge into the earth, you can alleviate some of the stress put on your system. That is the grounding effect. I have personally prioritized grounding myself to the earth as much as possible for over 5 years.
Inflammation -- The Root of Most Disease
One of the primary health benefits of grounding is its antioxidant effect. It helps alleviate inflammation throughout your body.
"I told [Clint Ober] 10 years ago, "What you need to do is show that grounding improves inflammation. If you can show that, then you can show that it improves heart disease. Because the real cause of heart disease is inflammation. It's not cholesterol like everybody believes. It's really inflammation," Dr. Sinatra says. ... [H]is experimental work was just really awesome, and I got involved with research myself. I'm still smack in the middle of it right now, but it took me 10 years."
Dr. Sinatra goes on to tell the inspiring story of a contractor he met about 23 years ago, who at one point worked with a group of Scandinavian carpenters who really understood the benefits of grounding and supported each other in maintaining this healthy habit:
"They all took off their shoes in the morning and walked barefoot on the wet grass," he says. "He came to work as a young carpenter, and the foreman said to him, 'Hey buddy, you better take your shoes off, because if you come to work right now with those shoes on, you're going to be busted up in 10 years. Your joints are going to be aching. Your muscles are going to be aching. Everything's going to be aching...' He told him to take his shoes off for an hour in the morning. Guys slugging sledgehammers, digging and hammering. It's stress to the tissues. But if they put their feet on the ground for an hour and had their coffee breaks with their shoes off, it made a difference."
According to Dr. Sinatra, inflammation thrives when your blood is thick and you have a lot of free radical stress, and a lot of positive charges in your body. Grounding effectively alleviates inflammation because it thins your blood and infuses you with negatively charged ions through the soles of your feet. But beware; not all surfaces allow you to ground.
What Surfaces Will Allow You to Properly Ground?
Good grounding surfaces include:
• Sand (beach)
• Grass (preferably moist)
• Bare soil
• Concrete and brick (as long as it's not painted or sealed)
• Ceramic tile
The following surfaces will NOT ground you:
• Rubber and plastic
• Tar or tarmac
An interesting titbit offered by Dr. Sinatra is how to ground while flying. I typically bring a grounding pad with me when I fly, but Dr. Sinatra claims that simply taking your shoes off and putting your feet (bare or with socks) on the steel struts will do the trick.
The Earth Is a Rich Source of Healthful Electrons
The earth is struck by lightning thousands of time each minute, primarily around the equator. Subsequently, the earth carries an enormous negative charge. It's always electron-rich and can serve as a powerful and abundant supply of antioxidant free radical-busting electrons.
The human body appears to be finely tuned to "work" with the earth in the sense that there's a constant flow of energy between our bodies and the earth. When you put your feet on the ground, you absorb large amounts of negative electrons through the soles of your feet. In today's world, this is more important than ever, yet fewer people than ever actually connect with the earth in this way anymore. Free radical stress from exposure to mercury pollution, cigarettes, insecticides, pesticides, trans fats, and radiation, just to name a few, continually deplete your body of electrons.
"We now know that oxidative stress causes disease. It causes inflammation," Dr. Sinatra says. "[But] we have this Earth – Mother Earth, that's going to give us all these free electrons."
Recharge Your 'Batteries' with Grounding
Dr. Sinatra, like myself, is a proponent for CoQ10, as it is a major electron donor and helps turn over ATP, which is the energy generated within each of your body's cells. Amazingly, grounding can also enhance ATP, via another mechanism. How do dietary-derived, oral antioxidants compare to the electrons transferred from the earth through your skin? According to Dr. Sinatra:
"Whether you take antioxidants... or whether you get electron donors through the skin, what you're taking in -- into your skin, and taking in orally -- is going to be synergistic. It's going to help your body... What's a healthy lifestyle? It's eating healthy. It's avoiding sugars. It's avoiding trans fats. It's eating organic much of the time. It's avoiding pesticides, insecticides, and chemicals. It's drinking healthy water, breathing in healthy air, and getting healthy sunlight... In other words, taking in these natural energies is a healing energy. Grounding is another natural energy that everybody should do in their lives, because it just makes sense. It incorporates a healthier lifestyle."
Walking Barefoot Is a Valuable Aspect of a Healthy Lifestyle
Exercising barefoot outdoors is one of the most wonderful, inexpensive and powerful ways of incorporating Earthing into your daily life and will also help speed up tissue repair, as well as easing the muscle pain you sometimes get from strenuous exercise. A review of the available research, published January 2012 in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health, agrees with the concept of reaping health benefits when connecting to the Earth1. According to the authors:
"Mounting evidence suggests that the Earth's negative potential can create a stable internal bioelectrical environment for the normal functioning of all body systems. Moreover, oscillations of the intensity of the Earth's potential may be important for setting the biological clocks regulating diurnal body rhythms, such as cortisol secretion.
It is also well established that electrons from antioxidant molecules neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS, or in popular terms, free radicals) involved in the body's immune and inflammatory responses. The National Library of Medicine's online resource PubMed lists 7021 studies and 522 review articles from a search of 'antioxidant + electron + free radical.' It is assumed that the influx of free electrons absorbed into the body through direct contact with the Earth likely neutralize ROS and thereby reduce acute and chronic inflammation.
Throughout history, humans mostly walked barefoot or with footwear made of animal skins. They slept on the ground or on skins. Through direct contact or through perspiration-moistened animal skins used as footwear or sleeping mats, the ground's abundant free electrons were able to enter the body, which is electrically conductive. Through this mechanism, every part of the body could equilibrate with the electrical potential of the Earth, thereby stabilizing the electrical environment of all organs, tissues, and cells.
Modern lifestyle has increasingly separated humans from the primordial flow of Earth's electrons. For example, since the 1960s, we have increasingly worn insulating rubber or plastic soled shoes, instead of the traditional leather fashioned from hides. Rossi has lamented that the use of insulating materials in post-World War II shoes has separated us from the Earth's energy field. Obviously, we no longer sleep on the ground as we did in times past.
During recent decades, chronic illness, immune disorders, and inflammatory diseases have increased dramatically, and some researchers have cited environmental factors as the cause. However, the possibility of modern disconnection with the Earth's surface as a cause has not been considered. Much of the research reviewed in this paper points in that direction."
The Sunflower Experiment
Last year, Gary Schwartz, PhD, at the University of Arizona, performed an elegant experiment with sunflowers to demonstrate the powerful biological effects of grounding. As shown in the photos below, one set of sunflowers were connected to a grounded power outlet via a thin metal rod placed in the vase, connected to a wire.
The second set was connected to an outlet that was not grounded. All of the flowers were freshly picked, from the same area, at the same time, and the water came from the same source and had nothing added. The experiment was blind, so the experimenter was unaware of which outlet had been grounded.
Photos used with permission from Gary Schwartz.
As you can see, by the seventh day, one set is clearly wilting away, while the other still looks plump and fresh. As hypothesized, the set that kept their freshness were connected to the grounded outlet. Even more remarkable was the dramatic difference in overall survival -- the grounded flowers survived for another 10 days after the ungrounded set had shriveled up and died!
According to Clint Ober, this isn't so surprising since flowers growing in the ground receive a continuous supply of energy from the earth. The grounding rod used in this experiment effectively mimics this natural ground connection, allowing them to thrive longer, as if they'd never been plucked in the first place. So, can this concept translate into better health for you? There's compelling evidence it can, and does...
How Grounding Changes Your Blood
Grounding helps thin your blood by improving its zeta potential, which means it improves the energy between your red blood cells. Research has demonstrated it takes about 80 minutes for the free electrons from the earth to reach your blood stream and transform your blood.
Do you know what a high-sugar diet, smoking, radio frequencies and other toxic electromagnetic forces, emotional stress, anxiety, high cholesterol, and high uric acid levels do to your blood?
All of these make your blood hypercoagulable, meaning it makes it thick and slow-moving, which increases your risk of having a blood clot or stroke. Hypercoagulable blood is the essence of inflammation, because when your blood does not flow well, oxygen can't get to your tissues. In fact, grounding's effect on blood thinning is so profound if you are taking blood thinners you must work with your health care provider to lower your dose otherwise you may overdose on the medication.
Zeta potential is the electrical potential of solids and liquids, also referred to as electrokinetic potential. Your red blood cells repel each other and function at the speed of light, traveling through your body at an astounding 186,000 miles per second. Grounding actually increases zeta potential by an average of 280 percent. According to Dr. Sinatra:
"This is the most incredible discovery, because if you can increase the thinning of your blood naturally by grounding, you can fight off disease. Not only heart disease and stroke, but I'm thinking cancer, Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis, or any illness that requires good oxygenation to the tissues."
Similarly, anything that lowers zeta potential of your blood will promote disease. For example, early (and some current) birth control pills were notorious for causing heart attacks in women. One of the mechanisms that causes this increased risk is that synthetic estrogens and progesterones increase blood viscosity, i.e., they decrease the zeta potential of your blood... There are currently studies being performed at the University of Arizona which will objectively document grounding effect on the zeta potential. They are anticipated to be completed this year.
Other Beneficial Changes Caused By Grounding
Animal experiments have also shown that ungrounded rats had higher blood sugar compared to their grounded counterparts, despite being fed identical diets. If disconnecting from the earth disrupts human sugar metabolism, we may have identified yet another contributing cause for the dramatic rise of diabetes in children.
"... I think the reason why we have a generation of diabetic kids is because we took away the ground, gave them a lot of sugar, and no exercise. That's the perfect storm," Dr. Sinatra says.
Experiments in Poland, the U.S. and Canada, using both animal and human models, show that grounding improves the human physiology. Other biochemical alterations caused by grounding include changes in:
• Calcium metabolism
• Fibroid metabolism
• White blood cells
Grounding also calms your sympathetic nervous system, which supports your heart rate variability. And, when you support heart rate variability, this promotes homeostatis, or balance, in your autonomic nervous system. In essence, anytime you improve heart rate variability, you're improving the entire organism -- in this case, your entire body and all its functions.
"In other words, we're there -- we're in a health mode, as opposed to disease mode. Grounding does that," Dr. Sinatra explains.
Contraindications and Other Warnings
While walking barefoot is clearly one of the most natural things you can possibly do to improve your health, there are still some contraindications and situations in which you may want to use caution.
"I don't like people to ground when they're taking Coumadin," Dr. Sinatra warns. "It's a relative contraindication because we have had people ground, taking Coumadin at the same time, and their blood became like water. It was like red wine and then it got really thin. That could be dangerous. If you have high blood pressure, [or]... if you had a stroke and you have thin blood, it's a disaster. We basically tell people that if you're on Coumadin, you must work with your doctor, because your doctor's going to have to reduce the Coumadin."
Depending on your health status and toxic load, your health may also get worse before it gets better when you start grounding on a regular basis. This is a classic detox reaction, which you may also experience with other detox methods.
"Some patients with polyneuropathy would get worsening of their limb pain on grounding, and some would get better. I want to make that clear that grounding is not a panacea," Dr. Sinatra says. "But what I've learned with grounding is that the sicker you are, the more you need to ground."
Rapid Benefits: An Earthing 1-Hour “Time Trial”
At a recent women’s wellness conference in Southern California, Earthing researcher and educator Christy Westen, D.C., gave a presentation about living vibrantly. She used the occasion to conduct an informal experiment, using the women in her audience as subjects, to measure how Earthing could influence the experience of vitality during the one-hour length of her talk.
About 100 women in attendance filled out before-and-after questionnaires which asked for a subjective assessment of different factors that influence how vibrant they were feeling. The questionnaire asked about energy, pain, stress/irritability, mood, circulation, and flexibility. About half the audience was familiar with Earthing.
Here’s how the experiment was set up. When the women entered the hotel conference room, they received a “goody bag” containing the questionnaire, a pen, an Earthing patch and cord, and a pocket mirror that lights up. Why the mirror? So they could easily view themselves before and after the talk, and see how they looked. Once seated, they filled out the “before” section of the questionnaire asking for their subjective impressions on how they felt, using a 1-10 scale.
Prior to the presentation, an Earthing wiring system had been laid out throughout the room that allowed each seated attendee to place the patch on the bottom of one foot, and then connect the cord to the room-wide system. The system was connected to grounded wall outlets. At the end of the talk, everyone filled out the “after” section of the questionnaire.
The results were “phenomenal,” Dr. Westen said. They demonstrated just how rapidly Earthing can enhance a woman’s vitality, she added, and “likely a man’s as well, although guys being guys they might be more reluctant to admit it.”
Here are the questions that were asked and the results:
● Question # 1 Energy
Before (or after) Earthing, my energy levels are: a numerical range from Horrible, to OK, to Magnificent.
78% reported more energy, on average an increase of about 40%.
● Question # 2 Pain
The level of pain in my body before (or after) Earthing is: a numerical range from Extremely painful, to OK, to I am pain-free.
60% of those with pain said they had less pain at the end, and an average decrease of about 30%
.● Question # 3 Stress
My level of stress and irritability before (or after) Earthing is: a numerical range from Terrible, I am extremely stressed, to OK, to I feel calm/centered.
77% reported less stress, on average about 50% better.
● Question # 4 Mood
My overall mood before (or after) Earthing is: a numerical range from Terrible, I feel extremely low, to OK, to My mood is wonderful.
82% said their mood had improved, with an average of 40%.
● Question # 5 Complexion
Before (or after) Earthing, when I look into the mirror, my face looks: a numerical range from Dull & Pale, to OK, to Vibrant & full of color.
73% thought they looked better, with an average improvement of 38 percent. We attributed the change to improved circulation and more calmness, even from just an hour of Earthing.
● Question # 6 Circulation
Before (or after) Earthing, the temperature of my hands/feet are: a numerical range from Poor – my hands/feet are ice, to OK, to Great – my hands/feet are warm.
65% stated that their circulation had improved , and on average by 32%.
● Question # 7 Flexibility
Before (or after) Earthing, if I reach down to touch my toes, my flexibility is: a numerical range from Poor, I am extremely stiff, to OK, to Excellent, I feel very flexible.
62% reported improvement, with about a 23 percent improvement.
Keep in mind that these changes occurred within an hour of being seated on typically hard, uncomfortable conference chairs next to people you don’t know.
Dr. Westen summed up the experience thusly: “As a health practitioner dedicated to helping patients feel better and become healthier, I have found that most people think that creating more vitality in life requires a ton of time, effort, and sacrifice. We have to sweat it out in the gym, strenuously try to eat the perfect diet, and offload as much stress as possible. To be sure, these are essential ingredients in a healthy lifestyle recipe, but often not so easy to accomplish. Earthing, on the other hand, requires no strain whatsoever and is, in fact, one of the easiest things you can do for your health. Until now it’s been the missing ingredient in the recipe. But now, it’s here, and scientific research is confirming its effectiveness. Just reconnect to the Earth, and even in one single hour you can feel a difference, sometimes profoundly so, and without any side effects! Make it a routine part of your life, and wow, you really put yourself on a direct path to becoming simply vibrant!”

Q: I just started sleeping grounded and feel a bit strange. What could that be from?
A: Initially, some people may feel some temporary discomfort or even flu-like signs, pain or achiness. In practically all cases, this experience is fleeting. This effect stems from a normalization of the body’s “electrical system.” As that process gets underway, the body’s ability to release accumulated toxicity may improve and you could feel that as transient discomfort. Typically, after some initial adjustment, those individuals start feeling better and more energized. The feeling might last a few days at the most but it will go away. If you are uncomfortable, stop using the device for several days and then begin again. In the majority of cases, no discomfort is felt at the beginning.
Q: Are there people who sleep grounded and don’t feel anything, or for whom grounding doesn’t work?
A: Everybody benefits in some way, but we are all different. The benefits can come quickly and dramatically, such as less pain and better sleep, or subtly and gradually over time. Often people who are very ill feel the difference more dramatically. Someone with radiant health and who sleeps well may not feel any difference, however, connecting to the Earth is helping to preserve and perpetuate the precious commodity of good health. We regard Earthing as a natural form of anti-aging medicine, whether you feel it or not.
Q: I purchased a bed sheet and noticed tingling in my feet for the first few nights. Should I be concerned?
A: Some people feel tingling or report a strange feeling in the beginning. This is a sign that the circulation is improving. We regard the sensation generally as part of a healing detox process as the body normalizes and inflammation goes down. If you are uncomfortable, stop using the device for several days and then begin again. . Or try spending a half hour twice a day barefoot outside. Then slowly increase your exposure.
Some of my own client feedback who at first experienced some detoxification and body rebalancing issues before experiencing the positive effects of earthing.
As a fibromyalgia sufferer for many years I have always struggled with circulation problems. I have always slept in socks and if i dare to remove them am renowned for having blocks of ice for feet....
It's now a week since your visit and I have slept on top of the sheet every night.
The first three days were awful - just like you had indicated I might I felt totally wiped out, like my condition was flaring. The detox type symptoms felt emotional as well as physical in that everything was an effort and by the third day I was tearful (we have just had a bereavement to be fair).
Yesterday was the first day I felt brighter.
I experienced tingling sensations in my feet and lower legs but not painful like pins and needles. By night 3 I was removing the covers because my feet were too hot! And it was 0 degrees! Unheard of for me and has to be the effect of the sheet.
For anyone with a chronic condition like myself, albeit I am largely recovered, I would suggest making time for a few rough days but the effects are worth it. I have never felt warm in bed here in the UK before save for in an electric blanket. And how good to get rid of that!
I am excited about what other positive effects might come through sleeping earthed and have been telling all my friends about it.
I am happy for any of this to be used if helpful to you Roy.
I received your earthing sheet and have had it on the bed for 6 months now. I've recently picked up a copy of 'Earthing' by Clinton Ober.
I noticed when I first slept on the sheet that I wasn't sleeping as much and was waking up in the night, where previously I slept through. This only lasted a day or two and returned to sleeping soundly through the night. The first major noticeable change was in my circulation. I would wrap up warm even on warm summer days and winter was almost unbearable. After sleeping on the sheet for a week I found myself overheating during the night and could leave the house without my usual thick heavy jumpers under my coat, even for the remainder of winter.
I suffered with sore knees during season changes and was fully expecting to live with the pain again this springtime, but they have been fine. No pain at all. I have also suffered with back pain from previous injuries that haven't affected me yet this year, even when I know I have over done it. I was speculated to have ME as a teenager and I couldn't make it through the day without regular naps even now at age 26. My energy levels have improved and though I am still taking naps on the odd day, it's not every day like before. Even when I'm busy running about all day, I can now get through to the evening without needing to nap.
Finally I used to have regular bladder infections as a child that affected me painfully as an adult with chronic cystitis. Though I found ways of coping with it, I still had flare ups. Only recently have I realised that I have not had any pain this year, other than when I know I am dehydrated, which is rare. No sign of it at all and through reading the book on earthing, I realise that is down to the anti-inflammatory affects of the negative electrons in the earths energy.
Thank you for your help Roy, I wasn't sure how the sheet would help originally but knew it was a healthy choice. I've been amazed at the improvements in 6 months. I'm hoping to get my nan to see the benefits as she suffers with rheumatoid arthritis. Thank you Roy Kate Hood
Look forward to hearing from you soon. Kate Hood
Medical and Medication Considerations
Posted on May 6, 2013 by Earthing Institute
Research indicates that regular Earthing restores and stabilizes a natural state in the electrical functioning of the body, affects many physiological processes, reduces inflammation, and improves sleep and energy.
If you are under the care of a health professional, we strongly advise you to inform your practitioner about Earthing because Earthing can influence how you feel, your medical test results, and may possibly require adjustment in your medication. It is strongly recommended that individuals taking medication to thin the blood, regulate blood sugar, control blood pressure, or to regulate thyroid hormone levels, consult their health care provider before Earthing.
Earthing influences thyroid function, so if you are on thyroid medication you may begin to feel symptoms of over-medication. Similarly, if you are on Coumadin, you need to know that Earthing has a blood-thinning effect so there could be a compounded response, and too much blood thinning. You’ll need to monitor your blood carefully and above all consult with your doctor. We also know that the regulation of blood sugar improves, so if you take anti-diabetic medication you need to check with your doctor to see if a medication reduction is in order. Keep in mind also that Earthing reduces inflammation, so if you are taking any anti-inflammatory medication please be sure to monitor your dosage with your doctor.
Whether you are barefoot on the ground outside, or grounding yourself indoors for many hours with an Earthing system, we want you to have the best and safest experience possible. If you have any doubts at all whether Earthing may be safe for you, simply go out in your backyard, or to your nearest grassy park, or sandy beach, and sit/stand/walk barefoot for at least a half hour or forty minutes. Try to do it once or twice a day. Earthing indoors on conductive sheets, mats, or with bands and patches, is the equivalent of being barefoot outdoors on the ground. Your body is absorbing the same natural energy from the Earth. It’s a simple experiment and often a surprising one. People feel better and notice a difference in a short period of time.
For further clarification, we asked Cardiologist Stephen Sinatra, M.D., the co-author of the Earthing book, about the medication issue. His comments:.
“The important thing is to be prudent. Keep in mind that Earthing reduces inflammation in the body and restores natural internal electrical stability and rhythms. Any doctor would applaud such benefits and improvements. But because of such changes, as good as they are, it is possible with continuing grounding, such as sleeping grounded at night, medication dosages may become excessive, and perhaps even unnecessary in some cases.
“Years ago as a practicing cardiologist in Connecticut, I often found myself having to reduce the level of Warfarin (Coumadin) for patients coming back to their homes after snowbirding in Florida over the winter months. Their blood coagulability had changed. I thought it was simply a result of going from warm weather to cold weather. I was wrong. I didn’t know anything about Earthing back then. I now know that the reason for the change was because they were going barefoot for many hours during the day and swimming in the ocean or in concrete pools. They were grounding themselves!
“There is something very special and healing that occurs in your body as a result of being in direct contact with the Earth. I regard it as pretty much the equivalent of being on a treatment table. Your body is absorbing the natural, subtle electric energies omnipresent on the surface of the Earth. There is an instant shift in your physiology. We see that happening in laboratory studies that measure the electrical activity inside your body.
“Logic tells us that the normal state of humans is to be grounded, that is, connected directly with the Earth. Most of us in the so-called developed societies function ungrounded, wearing plastic and rubber soled shoes, and no longer living on the Earth but above it and in structures that separate us from the Earth. For millions of years, our ancestors evolved in intimate connection to the Earth. We think that the evolving body adapted itself to the energies and frequencies in the ground and that by being ungrounded the body malfunctions in one way or another, or in many ways. Think of a flickering light bulb that is not fully connected to its energy source.
“Humans have increasingly adopted unnatural lifestyles, causing self-inflicted stress and illness. We regard the separation from Earth’s natural energies as one example of an unnatural lifestyle, along with more familiar factors such as poor diet and lack of exercise.
“Reconnecting to the Earth, such as being barefoot outdoors and sleeping or working indoors while using Earthing systems, is extremely beneficial. However, our research is in an early stage and we have not completed any direct studies related to medication, including Coumadin, a commonly used medical blood thinner and anti-clotting agent. In general, our experience suggests that some patients taking medication are able to reduce their dosage level. For that reason, we highly recommend that people on medication and considering Earthing should consult with their doctors first and then monitor their medication carefully.
“Earthing helps balance the nervous system, lower stress, reduce inflammation and inflammation-related pain, and improve sleep and energy. The research also suggests that the electrodynamics of blood, a subject not very familiar to doctors, is also improved, and this effect may lead to a more desirable blood viscosity (thickness), reduced aggregation of red blood cells, and better overall circulation.
“Your doctor is looking out for your well-being and will naturally be reluctant about something new that he or she has no knowledge about. If you are under a doctor’s care, we strongly advise you to consult with your physician before grounding yourself. If interested, the doctor can read our book, Earthing:The Most Important Health Discovery Ever?, as well as check out the research we have posted elsewhere on this website. Keep in mind that Earthing is nothing more than the equivalent of standing or walking barefoot or sleeping on the ground. The same natural, subtle electric energy that your body would absorb from being in direct physical contact with the Earth outside is the same energy that you receive when sitting or sleeping indoors and using an Earthing product. It is something totally natural.
“For those of you on Coumadin or any critical medication, you should decide with your health care giver about grounding yourself. If you decide to do it, it may be prudent to do so for shorter periods in the beginning, such as walking barefoot in the park or in your backyard, where it is, of course, safe and comfortable to do so, or ground yourself for a few hours while you watch television. As you slowly increase your Earthing time, monitor your situation carefully, including how you feel, so as to determine if your dosage of medication needs to be lowered. Ground with caution, and under the watchful eye of your physician.”
Earthing and Multiple Medications
We would also like to bring to your attention to the issue of multiple medications, as is often the case with elderly individuals or those with serious health complications
In these situations, we strongly recommend not starting Earthing until a discussion takes place about Earthing’s multiple physiological effects and potential effect on medication dosage with the doctor or health professional involved. Earthing promotes a variety of improvements in the function of the body. Such improvements, to be sure, are welcome, but one byproduct could be that a specific medication dosage may no longer be applicable simply because the body is working better. An overdose situation could develop. Symptoms of overdose could appear. For somebody taking a single medication, or perhaps two, such symptoms may be apparent, and easily remedied by consulting with one’s doctor and reducing the dosage.
When multiple medications are involved, the situation is more complex. Multiple interactions could occur as different medications affect each other. There might be some roughness as part of an initial healing effect as well.
For this reason, someone taking multiple medications should NOT start Earthing until he or she has talked about it with their health professional. Earthing is relatively new. Most doctors have not heard about it or don’t know just how significantly it can influence the physiology. Until there is more research and Earthing becomes more mainstream, this issue is a challenge. Doctors have the best interests of their patients at heart, so our advice is to always follow your doctor’s advice. He or she may say no, because of unfamiliarity with Earthing, or be open to it provided there is close monitoring of medications and reporting of any unusual reactions.
